New Visions: Health Careers

The New Visions: Health Careers program is designed for high school seniors interested in medical and health-related professions. Students learn in classrooms located at either St. Peter's Hospital in Albany or Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, through traditional methods (lecture, reading, research, writing and focused study), and through rotations.

Rotations are structured observations of professionals and procedures in a career field. New Visions: Health Careers students spend from one day to three weeks in 40 to 50 clinical and administrative areas of their hospital and at local health care facilities. Rotations include radiation oncology, the operating room, pharmacy, psychiatric units, rehabilitation, the business office and even maintenance, which poses special challenges in a sterile environment. Students benefit from experiences gained during such rotations at St. Peter's Hospital and all three branches of Ellis Medicine (Nott, McClellan and Bellevue).

New Visions: Health Careers students also rotate through the Center for the Disabled, Villa Mary Immaculate Nursing Home/St. Peter's Rehabilitation Center, St. Peter's Addiction Recovery Center, Hospice and other agencies.

Students completing New Visions have a clearer vision of their career and college goals along with firsthand knowledge of the day-to-day demands and rewards of various professions.

What others are saying:

"I feel New Visions programs are an exciting concept and an opportunity in secondary education providing selected students with a unique alternative to the traditional classroom setting. It takes a self-motivated, responsible, highly organized person to be truly successful in college. New Visions allows these students to see that and gracefully transition into their freshman year." -- Kerry Mendez, Associate Dean of Admissions, Union College

It's a fact

Eleven of the Capital Region's 25 largest private sector employers are in the medical field, according to the Business Review. Fifteen of the nation's 25 fastest growing careers are in medical or health-related fields, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
