Training for board members

Capital Region BOCES Management Services offers two separate training sessions for school board members during the 2011-2012 school year.

Fiscal Training

The six-hour training, which is legally mandated by the state, is free to component school board members. The trainings are divided into two three-hour sessions, and certificates will be issued for each completed session.

Part A of the training covers:

arrow bulletdiscussion of the roles and responsibilities of the governance team

arrow bulletadvancing the educational mission through fiscal accountability and

arrow bulletfiduciary responsibilities and financial reporting

Part B of the training covers:

arrow bulletreview of fund accounting and financial reporting

arrow bulletbudget development and management

Please note: If you have received partial training elsewhere and are unsure what training areas you still need, please fax documentation (certificate of completion) of the training you have taken to Assistant District Superintendent for Management Services Mark Jones (862-4949), who will notify you as to which training you still need to attend.

The schedule is as follows:

October 2011:

Tuesday, October 18 - Part A; 6-9 p.m.
Wednesday, October 19 - Part B; 6-9 p.m.
Central Admin., 900 Watervliet-Shaker Rd., Board Room

Registration deadline for October session is October 5.

 

November 2011:

Tuesday, November 29 - Part A; 6-9 p.m.
Wednesday, November 30 - Part B; 6-9 p.m.
Schoharie Career & Technical School, Route 30, Terrace Room

Registration deadline for November session is November 16.

 

May 2011:

Tuesday, May 22 - Part A; 6-9 p.m.
Wednesday, May 23 - Part B; 6-9 p.m.
Central Admin., 900 Watervliet-Shaker Rd., Board Room

Registration deadline for May session is May 10.

 

Training for new board members

Capital Region BOCES Management Services now offers training for new board members pursuant to Chapter 388 of the Laws of 2010 which requires all school district and BOCES board members elected or appointed for a first term beginning on or after July 1, 2011 to participate in training within the first year of service. The BOCES is pleased to be able to offer the required training “free” of charge to component school board members. The training is divided into two three-hour sessions, and certificates will be issued for each completed session.

Part A of the training covers:
arrow bulletAcquainting new board members with the powers, functions and duties of board of education;
arrow bullet The role of the board of education in educating all students; and
arrow bullet Encouraging the attainment of a higher level of student success.


Part B of the training covers:
arrow bulletThe powers and duties of other governing and administrative authorities affecting public education

Thursday December 15 Part B Board Room 6:00-9:00 p.m.

April 2012 Session
