For conserving enough energy to save nearly $300,000 — and 13,859 trees — Capital Region BOCES has won the Award for Energy Stewardship.
The award was presented at Capital Region BOCES' September 20 Board of Education meeting by Thomas Cappa of Energy Education, a Texas-based company that helps schools and other organizations nationwide implement cost-saving strategies. Capital Region BOCES works with Energy Education to lower its own energy usage, as well as help area school districts lower their energy usage.
The Award for Energy Stewardship recognizes BOCES’ efforts to implement an innovative people-oriented energy conservation and management program. The $296,000 savings occurred over 14 months. Capital Region BOCES is a cooperative of 23 school districts and the City of Albany; the cost savings benefits all the districts, since it helps lower BOCES’ administrative and overhead costs.
“We couldn’t be happier about our energy savings program, and I commend staff for doing their part to help,” said District Superintendent Charles Dedrick. “We look forward to continuing to save in the coming months and years — and to helping school districts save as well.”
The savings is Capital Region
BOCES’ cost avoidance, or the difference between what was spent on
energy from June 2009 to August 2010, compared to what was spent
during the same 14-month period the year before — after taking into
account factors like changing weather and energy rates.
