special education Surveys graduates for first time

release date: October 15, 2010

Contact: Carol d’Estienne, Principal, 518-464-6305

The first year of an annual survey of students and alumni who attended Special Education Division classes has shown a high level of satisfaction and post-graduate success.

The surveys, which were co-created by Special Education Principal Carol d’Estienne and her teaching staff along with Nancy Jones, BOCES school improvement and systems analyst, are a significant step toward verifying the effectiveness of Special Education programs and will also help educators identify gaps in education and support services that could be better addressed while students are still in school. The students surveyed were regular assessment high school students, meaning students who are in classes that prepare them to take Regents or Regents Competency Tests (RCTs).

"For years, the staff and I have been informally tracking our students' satisfaction and post-secondary plans," explained d’Estienne. "Now, we have the opportunity to learn in a more formal way what of their Special Education programs had the most impact for them and how their goals and dreams are actually translating to reality."

With just one year’s data, it is too soon to make generalizations or determine trends. However, educators are encouraged by participants' responses and optimistic about the usefulness of subsequent years' survey data in helping shape special education within the division.
