As a way to save money in the longterm, Capital Region BOCES has hired a full-time internal auditor, a certified public accountant who previously worked for the Albany and Troy city school districts.

John Mattox, who started October 18, is a full-time internal auditor. This is a switch from the past two years, when BOCES employed a part-time auditor. The change was made because a part-time auditor didn't have enough time to accomplish the job duties, and because a full-time auditor will have greater opportunity to find ways for BOCES to save funds — which will pay for the cost of expanding the position, said Assistant District Superintendent for Management Services Mark Jones. Larger school districts commonly have full-time internal auditors. "The Board of Education takes its fiduciary responsibility seriously, and this will fulfill that responsibility in a long-term cost-effective way," said Jones.

An internal auditor monitors, assesses and analyzes organizational risks and controls, and reviews and confirms information and compliance with policies, procedures and laws. So for instance, Mattox is currently reviewing all BOCES policies to make sure we have established any procedures they mention, and that those procedures are efficient. He also will review New York State education and municipal laws, to make sure BOCES follows them. Reviewing BOCES' financial accounting and operations, including inventory of items like computers, cameras, etc., also fall under Mattox' duties.

While reviewing laws and policies may not sound interesting, Mattox enjoys it. "To me it's a fun job — I like it," he said.
He sees his position as an informational, helpful one for BOCES, that will ultimately help BOCES be more efficient and effective. His previous experience includes working for accounting firms, schools and towns, and he said he is happy to be here.

Jones asked that staff welcome John, and that they be as helpful as possible, as he explores processes and procedures all over BOCES. "John is here as a management resource to help the entire organization, so please introduce yourself if he is in your area," Jones said.
