As cameras rolled in the NERIC production studio recently, Dr. Eileen Franko of the New York State Health Department (NYSDOH) blew air into a latex glove, while Capital Region BOCES Health/Safety/Risk Program Manager Kristin Bucciferro explained why this seemingly funny act actually has a serious purpose.

“It’s important for anyone who works in health care to determine if gloves have any holes or tears prior to use,” Bucciferro said, “to prevent exposure to infectious materials, chemicals or other hazards.”

Bucciferro and Franko (pictured at right) recently completed an online video training about Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) with technical and production support from Ira Goldstein, Manager of Emerging Technologies at the Northeastern Regional Information Center (NERIC).

The PPE online video training provides an overview of the different types of protective equipment and information to help employees identify and select the appropriate safety gear to protect against occupational hazards they may encounter on the job.

This is the second video project in two years that the NYSDOH has collaborated on with the BOCES and NERIC. In 2009, during the height of the H1N1 flu pandemic, the DOH teamed with Capital Region BOCES, Questar BOCES, NERIC and the State Education Department to produce an H1N1 N95 webinar. The webinar was designed to deliver key information to health care workers across the state efficiently and consistently. It was viewed by school nurses statewide as well nursing home staff and some county public health departments via the Internet.

“The first collaboration (the H1N1 N95 webinar) was invaluable to the health department—much better than trying to provide a lot of local training sessions,” Franko said. “So when the health department identified this latest need for training, I again approached Capital Region BOCES and NERIC to see if the same type of collaborative effort would be possible.”

Employers are required to train every worker who uses PPE. This webinar was developed for health care professionals across the state, including home health care aides, visiting nurses and other hospital and health care facility workers. The training would also be applicable to school nurses and other school health care professionals. Throughout the training, additional websites and resources are referenced for viewers seeking more specific information.

Similar to the first project, NERIC provided the production facility and editing services. As a health and safety professional, Bucciferro appears in the webinar demonstrating proper use of protective gear, such as gloves to protect the hands, masks to protect the face and safety goggles to prevent eye injuries.

The online training video is scheduled to debut this fall on the NYSDOH Learning Management System.
