Shared decision-making at the heart of change for Special Education

Request for volunteers: Principals' cabinets to begin meeting in October

During the week of Sept. 30, the Special Education administrative team continued work with the Capital Area School Development Association on the organization of the division's new principals' cabinets, which will begin meeting on a monthly basis this October.

These advisory cabinets, designed to improve communication within the Special Education Division, were created using recommendations from the comprehensive study of the division completed last year .

Cabinet meetings will be facilitated by the principals in each region, with each group discussing the same topic at their monthly meetings. For their first project, the principals’ cabinets will provide input to help finalize a guiding mission statement for the division. Additional discussion topics for this school year will include: expanding meaningful communication within the division, professional development needs and opportunities, and expanding the use of technology as a communication and education tool.

Cabinet recommendations will be discussed and acted on throughout the year by the Special Education administrative team. Regular updates on the decisions made will be publicized in future issues of BOCES Insider.

The principals' cabinets aim to reflect the diverse opinions and ideas of the Special Education staff. The cabinets will meet once a month from 2:30-4 p.m. throughout the school year.

If you work for the Special Education division and are interested in becoming a member of your region's cabinet, please e-mail Christine Carpenter, Special Education communications specialist.
