Local Professional Development Opportunities
Several organizations in the Capital Region provide staff development
opportunities that may be of interest to school library media specialists.
On-line
Professional Development Opportunities:
On-line professional development opportunities for school library
media specialists range from training on specific pieces of software
to non-credit courses from some of the top library schools in the country.
- University
of Wisconsin – Madison
School of Library and Information Studies/ Continuing Education Services
In half-day to ten-week courses explore topics from cataloging to
new titles in Childrens’ Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

- Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science
In the past topics as current at “Anime & Manga” and
blogging have been subjects of online courses at Simmons College.
- Rockland
Teachers’ Center Institute – Online
Courses
On-line courses here tend to focus on the integration of technology
into the curriculum, with classes ranging from 3 weeks to full
semesters.
- PBS TeacherLine
PBS sponsored workshops focus on educational pedagogy covering
topics such as multiple intelligences, assessment, evaluation
and addressing
different learning styles.
- Effective Teaching Program - NYSUT Education and Learning Trust
Both college credit and continuing education courses are available
on-line through colleges in the state on a variety of educational
practice topics.
- Model Schools
NERIC online courses are free for Blackboard Subscribers: Albany
Diocese, Bethlehem, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, CTE, Duanesburg,
Niskayuna,
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, Salmon River, SSS (Health Safety and
Risk Management), TRE Center and Voorheesville. On-line training
opportunities
range from Adobe products to use of emerging technologies.
